Basically, there were tensions between the two nations because they were both feeling threatened by each other’s advances in nuclear weapons. Don’t waste time! Both made propaganda that made themselves out to be the â€Å"good guys† and pointed fingers at each other for being the â€Å"bad guys.† So, who was right? First, the USSR communist bloc consisted of many socialists. Socialists believed that the free market was bad and that the government should be in complete control of everything that the citizens own and have, including property. By doing this, the nation would be regulated. There would not be people who are extremely rich are poor, but there would be more of a happy medium and everyone would be equal. They believed that private property made it difficult for there to be unity in the nation. Their proposition was that there be a tax put on the wealthier people so that the poor and needy can be taken care of. This view is understandable. In many ways, the USSR was similar to Robyn Hood in the fact that he took money from the rich, but gave it to the poor in order for them to get the help they needed. However, I do see an issue in their views because no one is truly free to do what they want or live how they want to live. Everyone is stuck at the same level an there is no room for grow th in the economy because everyone is getting paid around the same amount and is only allowed to be given what they need. On the other hand, the US believed the polar opposite of what these socialists believed. Adam Smith and John Locke were the inspirers of the beliefs held by the free world. Adam Smith taught that the free market should be guided by the â€Å"invisible hand,† not the government. The invisible hand is where the prices of goods are set to whatever the majority of the people will buy them at. Therefore, the people act as an â€Å"invisible hand† that guides what the prices should be. John Locke taught that the three things that our government must protect is our life, liberty, and our property. Without these things, we do not truly have freedom or order in our nation. They saw the USSR as controlling and depriving their people from freedom. Now that the background on why these two countries were bickering, it is much easier to understand why each nation did what they did during the cold war. These two nations were semi-avoiding each other by not having a giant war, but instead having little wars that they fought I other countries called surrogate wars. An example of a surrogate war would be the Vietnam war. Another conflict that happened was the Cuban Missile Crisis. America was placing missiles in Cuba, which was an obvious threat to the USSR. So, they fought back (in that passive aggressive, avoiding actual conflict way) by putting missiles in Cuba. For 13 days, everyone in the world was panicking over the fact that these missiles could go off at any time. How could they not have known that they were bluffing? I feel like the US and the USSR are both singing, â€Å"I can do anything you can do better, I can do anything better than you.† In the end, the cold war was just a bunch of little surrogate wars instead of giant nuclear bombs going off because everyone was too scared to play that card. The war is very important though because it created more peace between all the nations involved. The communist countries can live the way they want to live without getting in the way of what the free world nations believe. This means that they no longer have to compete and argue who is right or wrong. Neither one is â€Å"right,† but they are both just focused on two different things. The communists want to make sure that everyone in the nation is taken care of and has what they need, while the capitalists just want a government that allows them to be able to be as free as necessary and lead their own live.

Charles Carrol Of Carrolton Essay INTRODUCTION AND THESISCharles Carrol was born of Irish descent on September 20, 1737 in Annapolis, Maryland. Catholics in Maryland were denied basic educational and political freedoms. So from the age of eight, Carrol was educated at St. Omer, a Jesuit school in England. He spent the next six years studying in Rheims, Bourges, and Paris. From there he went to London to study law for another six years. At the age of twenty six, Carrol returned to Maryland. French influence was apparent in Carrols manner, language, and equestrian abilities.Charles Carrols Irish Catholic background is what influenced him to participate actively in the American Revolution and sign the Declaration of Independence. LIFE BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONHe acquired the Manor of Carrolton, a 10,000 acre estate in Maryland from his father. Carrol was then known as Charles Carrol of Carrolton to distinguish himself from his father, Charles Carrol of Annapolis, and his fathers father, also Charles Carrol (Whitney 1964). When Carrol was 30, in June 1768, he married his cousin Mary Molly Darnall. He had seven children with Molly; only three lived to maturity (Ferris 1975). After his return to Maryland, Carrol became famous as a leader of the patriotic movement. Second Citizen was the name he used when writing newspaper articles arguing about the legal issues surrounding the proclamation in 1771 that civil officer of Maryland should collect certain taxes without the approval of the legislature. The people of Annapolis were grateful to him when the proclamation was hanged and made him their First Citizen. ( Whitney 1964) At almost forty years of age, Charles Carrol of Carrolton was considered one of the wealthiest men in the Colonies (Malone 1954). Carrol III achieved his remarkable success as a planter, businessman, and politician (Ferris 1975). CHARLES CARROL OF CARROLTON THE PATRIOTIn 1773 is when he became a public man. He became known as a leading Patriot in Maryland even though most of his services were unofficial (Malone 1954). Charles Carrol of Carrolton risked his fortune and signed the Declaration of Independence without the slightest hesitation. He explained his decision to a friend in the form of a letter. He said the moment the Americans admitted the British had the right to tax us in all casesthe most abject slavery and the deepest distresses would follow overnight. Carrol was of Irish descent and the Irish had seen what the British Parliament could do to a defeated country. Throughout the American Revolution, the Irish committed themselves to the American cause, unfortunately with their blood. Many Irishmen gave their own lives for the independence of America from British control. (Fleming 1997)The people viewed the four signers from Maryland as young, mostly wealthy, and notable for their good manners and their patriotic devotion to the cause of American independence (Malone 1954). After his return to Maryland from Europe, he lived a quiet life, banned from public life by his Catholicism. His publi c life started when he wrote in the local newspaper attacking the Proprietary Governor of Maryland with opposition to fees and stipends for Anglican clergy and civil officers. In 1776, because of his Catholic religion and French fluency, he was sent to Canada along with his priest cousin John, Benjamin Franklin, and Samuel Chase. Their reason there was to convince the Canadians to join the colonies in their cause for independence from the British. Their trip failed. He returned to Philadelphia just in time to sign the Declaration of Independence. Carrol served as a delegate until 1778. He was also elected to the Maryland state senate and served until just after the turn of the century. In 1804, when he was not reelected to the state senate, sixty seven year old Carrol retired from public life. He spent most of his later years at Doughoregan Manor, near Elliot City Maryland, and Deshon-Caton-Carrol House in Baltimore (home of his youngest daughter Mary) concentrating on managing his land, all 80,000 acres of it reaching across Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York. He also took care of his investment in the Patowmack Company which established a canal system in t he Chesapeak Bay area.(Ferris 1975)Charles Carrol of Carrolton was the last surviving of the fifty six signers of the Declaration of Independence. Richard Ii Essay Questions The Elizabethan World Order was a theological, legal, scientific, and moral plan that provided the ultimate solution to unexplained aspects of the world. It was designed to provide answers to problems that existed regarding human existence. The Elizabethan World Order consists of five major principles, â€Å"The Chain of Being†, the linkage or classes, the middle position of man, man as a social being, and the â€Å"General Notion of Correspondences.†The Great Chain of Being states that order resides in polarities. â€Å"Hot things are in harmony with cold; dry with moist;† and so on. Everything is involved in the order. Go regulated all things. From the lowest earthly creature to the human beings, there is a set chain of order from the superior to the inferior delegated by God. All classes in the Elizabethan world are linked. The lowest creature on the sea floor is linked to the highest creature in the heavens because the surface of the water is in contact with the air. Consequently all classes in human society are linked together. Man lie halfway between angel and beast. They are superior to beasts whereas they were given reason and understanding, but they are inferior to angels because they have not been fully elevated to the level of understanding and control of angels. They are the image of God but still live like animals. Man is insufficient alone. He is a social being who is proned to sin because of his inherited â€Å"fallen† nature. Only beasts or God can exists alone. Humans require social interaction. In the human world there is a hierarchy. In the political and church world there exists a chain of command, so to in the everyday life of humans. God set a hierarchical order to the way things are conducted. John of Gaunt Previously he had upheld the belief that this world order laid down by God gave Richard II the right to do as he pleased and tarnish the throne he inherited. This preliminary belief was evident throughout his conversation with the Duchess of Gloucester in Act 1, Scene 2. The Duchess wanted John to avenge the death of her husband, John responded by saying, â€Å"God’s is the quarrel; for God’s substitute, His deputy anointed in His sight, Hath caused his death, the which if wrongfully Let heaven revenge, for I may never lift An angry arm against His minister† (I, 2, 39-43). When he was gravely ill he met with Richard II and vocalized his disapproval. Duchess of Gloucester does not agree with the order of the time. The court of a corrupt king killed her husband and she wants revenge. It is not socially acceptable to murder the innocent and therefore she did not believe God would delegate the power to do so to a man. She didn’t care about the El izabethan Order. Duke of York belief in the Elizabethan World Order is based on the familial hierarchy. He had never questioned Richard II’s questionable decisions until Richard denied Hereford his rights as surviving heir by taking Gaunt’s possessions to fund the war in Ireland. â€Å"Take Hereford’s rights away, and take from time His charters and his customary rights; Let not tomorrow then ensue today; Be not thyself; for how art thou a king But by fair sequence and succession?† (II, 1, 204-209) The Duke realizes Richard is disturbing the very hierarchy that allowed him to inherit the throne. He is very passionate about the existence of order even though he realizes that Richard has done Hereford wrong he still asks him to put down arms and not rebel against the sovereign king. (II, 3, 156-165) He takes a neutral stance, a stance for the Elizabethan World Order as both sides have broken the order of the world. Bishop of Carlisle has perhaps the stronge st beliefs in the Elizabethan World order. Based in his religious views, the Bishop believes anyone challenging the divine right of a king to be wrong and therefore views Hereford as a traitor. â€Å"What subject can give sentence on his king? And who sits here that is not Richard’s subject?† (IV, 1, 127-128) God dictates who is king and only God is fit to judge the king in the ways of order. The Bishop predicts chaos will ensue after the disruption of order and the country will deteriorate. Till the end Carlisle does not accept the kingship of Henry and is banished for this belief. The Gardener and Man speak up against Bolingbroke’s ascent to the throne. Their perception of order is political in nature. Like their garden a government must keep unruly and ambitious forces in check in order to be fruitful and successful. â€Å"Why should we, in the compass of a pale, Keep law and form and due proportion, When our sea-walled garden, the whole land, Is full of wee ds, her fairest flowers choked up, Her fruit trees all unpruned, her hedges ruined, Her knots disordered, and her wholesome herbs Swarming with caterpillars?† (III, 4, 43-50) In their eyes Bolingbroke is a weed choking Richard, the fair flower. On physical examination, temperature was found to be 98 degree Fahrenheit, pulse 116/minute, blood pressure128/78mmHg, weight 68.0 kg, and height 177 cm. His pupils were 5mm in diameter and reactive. In the review of systems, the patient denied any pulmonary, cardiac, renal, and abdominal complaints. There was no complaining of increased tearing from eyes. Lungs were clear and the heart rate was regular without murmurs. Bowel sounds were normative. The patient was not oriented to time. His affect was flat and irritable. He was evasive and tangential while answering questions. A chest radiograph and electrocardiogram was normal. His urinary drug screen was positive for amphetamines, methamphetamines, and cannabinoids. Blood chemistry concentrations/counts/percent of the following analysis were mainly within reference limits: alcohol The patient was transferred to the inpatient psychiatry unit. The next day, the patient was disoriented, refused to talk to the treatment team, and slept most of the day. On his fourth hospital day, the patient was much more oriented and reported that he was unable to get methamphetamine for the past six to eight weeks because he could not afford it. The patient would use the crystals formed from one bottle for four to seven days. He claimed that his friends used those crystals intravenously after diluting them. The patient reported that it would give him the same high as methamphetamine and he would occasionally have feelings of dà ©jà   vu. The patient also reported having olfactory hallucinations while using it. He said that he liked the increase in heart rate and the â€Å"rush† he used to get after every use. The patient reported that he would sleep most of the day when he was using it. He denied unwanted adverse effects during his use except for frequent headaches upon waking up which were relieved by over-the counter analgesics. The patient had been using the insecticide for six to eight weeks and only used methamphetamine one (1) day before coming to the ER. The patient claimed that he had been compliant with his medications for bipolar disorder until he started using it. The patient was taking divalproex sodium 400mg twice daily and quetiapine extended-release 300 mg at bedtime. He voiced that he, since a few weeks before coming to the ER, got scared that he might get cancer because of the frequent use of the insecticide which led him to have suicidal ideation. Despite the reported use for six to eight weeks, the patient had no significant physical findings associated with pyrethroid abuse when he presented to the ER. The patient had suicidal ideations apparently precipitated by his use of pyrethroid. His statements about friends using it intravenously highlight the phenomenon of an under reported substance being abused with little or no tellt ale signs by people with high risk for self-harm. DISCUSSION Pyrethroid cause hyper-excitation by affecting sodium channels which are kept open for unusually long periods of time.[1] Animal studies of pyrethroid toxicity have shown hyperglycaemia and elevated plasma levels of noradrenalin and adrenaline.[2] These may account for the â€Å"rush† the patient experienced with use of it. Ingestion and parenteral injection of pyrethroid in suicide attempts, occupational exposure, and accidents are well documented and have resulted in poisoning syndromes with characteristic sympathetic activation, lacrimation, hyperexcitability, choreoathetosis, and status epileptics.[3. 4, 5] Reports of association of pyrethroid with parenteral drug abuse are fairly sparse. These have shown adverse effects like local erythematic, cellulites, and vasculitis.[6, 7] These reported cases had the pyrethroid injected either subcutaneously(popping) or intravenously usually resulting in local effects that could be noted immediately on examination. There was also ass ociation with suicidal history or ideation. Communication via phone with the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) was made. NPIC stated that they had no official documented cases processing pyrethroid to produce effects similar to methamphetamine or case reports of the use of pyrethroid as a recreational substance. There are certain limitations to this report. The anamnesis was taken from a person suffering from substance abuse and bipolar disorder, the latter being untreated for the last six to eight weeks, making his credibility questionable. However, our longstanding knowledge of patients with this kind of problems in this area suggests that this patient’s report should not be dismissed without careful consideration. The Mochans got sick of trading goods all across the island just to get the things that they want or needed. The Chief decided that they would use clam shell for currency instead of trading. Intelligence is the ability to learn facts and skills and apply them; it can also be referred to as knowledge. When we look at knowledge we typically look at it from the aspect of nature and nurture, nature being what we come into this world with and nurture is what we acquire after we have entered this world. But the question I am focused on is where do we get our intelligence, are we born with it or are we somewhat gaining it after birth, is a new born child capable of knowing what is happening around him and grow up knowing how to act as an adult from birth or do he have to acquire the ability for adult performance?. So the experiment I am referring to was taught by one Dr. Richard Gerring, where taking a new born child and imagine what it would be like to come into a situation as such a child. One such example of testing intelligence starts with perceptions. It was thought for a long time that children was color blind, because we could not just ask a neonate â€Å"do you see colors?†, so the first experiment to detect whether a child perceive color would be from one researcher by the name of Burstein. Burstein took a set of 3 month old kids and give them solid colored toys and soon the kids got tired of looking at the toys over and over again; now the simple fact about colors is the wave length that they give off, colors such as green or orange gives off a bright wave length that is attractive, but a color like grey and white has dull wave lengths. Or also if you keep looking at the same color whether bright green or red you would soon get tired of the color because your brain has already adapted to it and you become bored. So to test this theory I did my own experiment. Scientific Question: Can children perceive colors and understand change although they are small and have not yet fully acquired learn intelligence of difference? Hypothesis: Children do perceive colors, they also have an intelligence of change in the factors around them just as older children and adults do even though they are of young age. My objective: To see whether children do perceive and understand colors although they may not know the colors by names, do they have the ability to detect the change from such a young age. Type of design of Qualitative Investigation: Investigation-action So with this experiment I am taking Three (5) children ages 3 months to 2 years old and place all of them in the same room for 5 days for 3 hours with the same set of toys: 2 red truck and 4 yellow cars. Based on investigation 5 days/3 hours results, an action would be taken to confirm findings. Methology The study type that we will carry out is descriptive. Universe: A preschool at the Community center, Vanard, Castries. Manipulate: 5 children ages 3 months to 2 years old. Operational variables: Sex and ages of the children, place and time Independent Variables: Colors of toys Techniques used to obtain the data of this study: * Direct Observation There needs to be constant observation of the children while playing with the toys and note the level of interest that is given to each toy over the period of 5 days for 3 hours, and then analyze data at the end of each day whether the interest dwindles or not. Make a note of just how much had the attention dwindled. Analysis of Data: Day 1: All 5 kids are happy with the new toys for the 3 hours Day 2: All kids are happy and move around contentedly with the toys Day 3: The Kids are demonstrating a lack of interest in the toys now and have come to interchange a lot between the 6 pieces. Day 4: The children are no long grabbing for the toys but are beginning to get very frets and occasionally when I give them a toy they may calm a bit but then continue to fret. Obvious signs that they no longer are interested in the toys. Day 5: Today is they last day and I have noticed for the past 2 hours nobody took the toys, at the 3rd hour they were all crying. Gathered Results: At the end of day five, I had a set of crying kids on my hands who were obviously unhappy and who were definitely were no longer interested in the given toys. So can I determine that the Children are just bored by the toys in themselves or the colors? So now what I would do is my action to the investigation to confirm the results from the 5 days. I took the same set of toys, 2 red truck and 4 yellow cars and I repainted them (please note that paint used was indeed child friendly and not harmful in toxins). The toys were repainted and reintroduced again the next day for the same 3 hours. Final Results: Amazing! The Kids grabbed at those toys as if they were new and were all laughs with the very same toys that yesterday received no attention. This proves simply that young children although they are not yet well cognitively develop do see colors. The fact that they saw the same color toys for 5 days for 3 hours and got bored on day 5 but had renewed interest in the same give toy on the 6 day when reintroduced in different colors told me they got a new stimulus to the change. The fact that they understand quantity although they cannot express it shows intelligence that can be developed. So as the child gets older you start counting fingers and toes and soon the child can tell you that you have maybe ‘6’ more than they do or ‘6’ less. The fact that they grow to understand numbering tells us that they acquire knowledge and increase their intelligence from the mere concept of visual â€Å"more or less† that they originally had. So when we think of  intelligence and we think of knowledge in the sense of nature vs nurture, we can safely say that some intelligence we are born with and are integrated in our genes and there are some intelligence that are acquired and expanded upon but learning and concurring. Does this mean that our behavior can be manipulated from an early age through education? This question is answered by a simple experiment. The experiment can be done by looking at how kids acquire action to word, if you try to speak to a child age 3 years as you would an adult the child would be confused. So you have to simplify your speech to that child to get him/her to do what you need him/her to do. Like when you are getting a child to eat food, you would put the child in the high chair and by actions show the child you are opening in your mouth while saying â€Å"aaaahh†, your mouth opening and the word â€Å"aaaah† suggest that every time you do the action and bring the spoon up with food you want the child to open their mouth and eat. So you link action and words which manipulates the child actions and often you hear people saying the words like â€Å"yum yum† with a smiling expression while the child’s eating to get them to understand that what they are eating is good. Therefore we get actions to words and perception of the food. So when it comes to knowledge our environmental factors can con-coursing an influence us, bringing us into making decisions and having preferences to things that we were not born with.
